The M2 is a classic historical wreck. This 296-foot sub sits complete and upright on a sandy sea bed. Were it not for the brightly coloured sponges and anemones that cover her superstructure you could easily be fooled into thinking that she was still operational. Built by Vickers in 1918, she sank in January 1932 with the loss of all 60 crew members. Lengthy recovery operations were finally beaten by the weight of the vessel, strong tides and bad weather. Today she sits in 35 metres with her conning tower standing some 13 metres proud. She was adapted to carry a small folding-wing sea plane, which lived in a small hanger just forward of the conning tower. Still plainly visible is the jib over the hanger door that was used to lift the aircraft back on to its launching ramp after landing at sea. “A great historic wreck and a really atmospheric dive.”
