This 1,334-ton British steamer, built in 1921, was heading from Antwerp to Cork with 1,000 tons of general cargo when she ran into thick fog about 12 miles west of Beachy Head. Unfortunately, heading straight towards her and invisible in the fog was a much bigger 5,500-ton Greek steamer. The ships collided and the Waterford quickly sank. Today she sits upright, pointing into the west, with a slight list to port. It is 20 metres down to her decks and a further 10 metres to the sea bed. Her single screw has been salvaged but apart from that she is largely intact. Blue ceramic tiles are still in place on the floor of the galley and enormous cooking pots can still be seen. “Intact and upright, plenty to rummage around and also possible penetration for more experienced wreck divers”
